As his administration approached its final months in office, President Muhammadu Buhari delivered a powerful and reflective New Year message on January 1, 2023, urging Nigerians to rise above partisanship and political manipulation and vote wisely in the upcoming general elections. He stressed the need for citizens to elect leaders with strong character, vision, and commitment to the country’s progress.

In what many regarded as his final major address before the general elections, Buhari called on the electorate to take ownership of Nigeria’s future by supporting credible candidates who would lead with transparency, fairness, and a deep understanding of the country’s complex challenges.

A Call for Responsible Voting and Vigilance

Speaking directly to Nigerians from all regions, ethnic groups, and religious backgrounds, Buhari emphasized that the success of the 2023 elections depended on the maturity and responsibility of both voters and political actors.

“As we move toward the 2023 general elections, let us remember that our choices will determine the path our nation takes in the years ahead. We must resist being used by desperate politicians who seek power by any means. It is our civic duty to elect individuals who have demonstrated integrity and genuine concern for Nigeria’s development,” Buhari stated.

He warned against political violence, vote-buying, and election-related misinformation, urging citizens to reject any attempts to incite division or unrest. He also encouraged Nigerians to hold elected leaders accountable and to ensure that political participation extends beyond Election Day.

Assurance of a Peaceful Transition

President Buhari reiterated his long-standing commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections. He noted that his administration had made significant investments in strengthening electoral institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and pledged that government agencies would remain neutral and professional during the election process.

“I remain committed to ensuring a peaceful handover of power to whoever Nigerians elect as their next president. I have directed all security agencies to maintain law and order during and after the elections and to protect the rights of all voters,” he said.

This assurance followed Buhari’s previous statements promising that he would leave behind a legacy of strengthened democracy, peaceful political transitions, and respect for the rule of law.

Acknowledging Challenges, Encouraging Hope

Reflecting on the difficulties experienced during his tenure, Buhari acknowledged that many Nigerians had faced economic hardship, rising insecurity, and other socio-political struggles. However, he also expressed confidence that the future holds opportunities for growth if the right leadership is in place.

He called on the next administration to build on existing reforms in infrastructure, agriculture, anti-corruption, and public service delivery, while urging political leaders to prioritize inclusive governance and national healing.

“We have come a long way, and while we have made progress in some areas, I admit there is still much to be done. My hope is that the next set of leaders will consolidate our gains and tackle our lingering problems with courage and sincerity,” Buhari said.

Young People Urged to Step Forward

President Buhari also used the opportunity to address Nigerian youth, particularly first-time voters. He encouraged them to participate in the electoral process and make their voices heard through peaceful engagement and voting.

He noted that young people have always played a vital role in shaping Nigeria’s political future and that the 2023 elections provided a platform for them to influence the direction of national policy and governance.

“To our youth, I say this: the power to shape Nigeria’s future lies in your hands. Use your voice, use your vote, and do not allow your energy to be misdirected by those who do not share your hopes and dreams,” Buhari advised.

A Farewell and a Vision for the Future

With less than six months to the end of his presidency, Buhari’s speech carried a tone of farewell blended with a hopeful vision for a better Nigeria. He thanked Nigerians for the opportunity to serve them over the past eight years and asked for continued prayers and support for the country’s unity and peace.

He concluded by expressing optimism that the 2023 elections would mark a new chapter in Nigeria’s democratic journey — one driven by credible leadership, responsible citizenship, and a shared commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous nation.

As the countdown to the February 25, 2023 presidential election began, Buhari’s address served as a reminder of what is at stake: the preservation of Nigeria’s democracy, the future of its economy, and the wellbeing of over 200 million citizens.
